Shimoda Onsen is the oldest hot spring in Amakusa. Legend tells how the spring was discovered when an injured white heron took refuge and healing in the Shimotsu-Fukae River. This Public Hot Spring Resort is recognized for its high quality mineral waters good for both skin and health. There are more than ten hotels and inns in this spa town which faces the East China Sea. The porcelain-tile-paved street and the Shimotsu-Fukae river combine to create a special charm for this hot spring town.
